Modern Cabin Basement Remodel in Grain Valley
Some homes already have a soul. This Grain Valley, Missouri log cabin just needed the right updates to let it shine. Originally designed for Estes Park, Colorado (and later built in Grain Valley), this true log cabin has charm. When the owners hired Haven Reno KC to finish the basement, they asked us to help them create a functional, modern cabin basement that still felt true to the home’s original character.
From day one, this was not about erasing the past. It was about honoring it.
Before: Unfinished Basement With Potential
Before the remodel, the basement had strong bones but the style felt disconnected from the rest of the home. Key elements like cedar paneling and wood stove installed years earlier by the homeowner’s father carried deep sentimental value and needed to be preserved.
Our approach focused on careful planning, intentional demolition, and protecting what mattered most.
After: Remodeled Basement With Modern Cabin Style
The finished basement is layered, warm, and highly functional while staying true to the cabin’s roots.
Preserved Cedar Paneling With Family History
One of the most meaningful details is the original cedar paneling, installed years ago by the homeowner’s father. Our team carefully protected and preserved this feature during construction so it could remain a focal point of the space.
Before: Basement Game Room and Workout Area
This space was a multi-purpose game and workout zone. The drop ceiling and lighting didn’t feel like “them.” What they really needed was an entertainment space that could also double as a guest bedroom.
After: Guest Bedroom With Murphy Bed and Storage
The transformation is incredible. A custom Murphy bed allows the space to easily transition between guest accommodations and everyday use. When closed, it serves as beautiful built-in storage and a design feature rather than an afterthought. When open, it feels like a studio apartment. Truly a home away from home.
Before: Carpeted Basement and Open Storage Areas
Before, this space had carpet and a few mystery areas the homeowners didn’t know what to do with. It included a doorless storage area under the stairs with a panel to keep pets out. They were unsure how to use this area in a way that felt intentional.
After: Concrete Overlay Flooring and Pretty Storage
A copper-toned concrete overlay by Big Red Decorative Concrete anchors the space and adds warmth and durability. It brings a subtle industrial edge that still feels right at home in a log cabin setting. We also added a custom mini-door under the stairs and enclosed storage for both beauty and convenience.
Before: Open Basement Entertaining Space
This space had dated lighting and a drop ceiling, but our clients had a vision. They could imagine a future bar area where they could entertain friends.
After: Custom Basement Bar and Kitchenette
The custom black kitchenette features decorative box trim that adds depth and architectural interest. It functions as a bar and serving space while visually grounding the open layout.
Custom Reclaimed Wood Light Fixture
This project includes a truly special custom light designed by Faye in collaboration with Ryan at Premier Lighting and Colby with Joiner Electric. The fixture features a reclaimed wood beam salvaged from a 100+ year old church in Freeman, Missouri. We blended history, craftsmanship, and function into a statement piece that cannot be replicated. The homeowner said this was her favorite part!
Before: Basement Office Without a Door
Before, the office on the left was missing a functional door. While there was a dartboard for entertainment, it wasn’t serving the function they needed.
After: Cedar Barn Door
We added a door that matches the cabin theme and can be left open to serve as a statement piece, bringing warm wood tones to an otherwise empty wall.
Before: Dated Basement Bathroom
This bathroom served the family well for many years from a functional standpoint, but the homeowners wanted to add visual appeal.
After: Remodeled Basement Bathroom
The remodeled basement bathroom now feels cohesive with the rest of the space while still being practical for everyday use.
Before: Dark Basement Office With Drop Ceiling
Before, this office felt dark with dated lighting and low drop-tile ceilings.
After: Home Office Remodel With Blue Built-Ins
Now the office reflects the homeowner’s personality with beautiful built-ins, wall sconces, and moody blue cabinetry that truly brings the space to life. It actually makes you want to work.
A Basement Remodel That Feels True to the Home
The finished basement now feels like it has always been part of the home. It respects the cabin’s history, reflects the homeowners’ style, and supports how they live today.
This is what we love most about remodeling: blending past, present, and purpose into a space that truly feels like home.
